As the title asks, do you overpack? Have you ever packed too many items for a trip? If you have, you know that this can be annoying. You don't have room for things you buy, your bag is heavy, and sometimes you have to pay extra when you fly. Too much is not good.
The same is true with idioms and slang. Some people and teachers think that students should memorize all the idioms and all the slang that they find. They think is the way to sound like a native English speaker.
This is not true! Think of your own first language. Do you know all idioms and slang? Probably not. I know that I don't.
Idiom: Too many cooks spoil the broth
Meaning: If too many people work on the same project, it will probably not be successful because of too many ideas and opinions.
Instead of memorizing everything, you should only remember the idioms and slang words/phrases that you would like to use or that you hear often. By doing this, you will learn with less stress because the new vocabulary is easy to practice, and you will learn some vocabulary by accident. When you hear vocabulary, you accidentally learn it!
Stay motivated and don't stop learning. Even on a day off from studying you can notice new English information. Being consistent is the trick to becoming a better speaker. It can be done!
Maybe you have received some not good English advice, but don't worry, we can fix that!
