Howdy again weekend language warriors!
First, there are many links in this post. Click them for more information. Enjoy!
Learning vocabulary can be difficult. Memorizing is maybe easy, but it can be hard to decide what to memorize. One way to decided which words to learn is to think about where you are and then to find a book or search the internet for information about slang and idioms. You can learn the slang that is used in your area first. That's easy!
My home town is a province in Canada called Manitoba. It is part of an area called 'the prairies'. I have a book with some regional slang. If you are going to visit Manitoba, you will need to learn the slang. Let's try to guess what the phrases mean!
Try to match the phrase to the meaning. Good luck! The answers will be at the bottom of this post.
1) Garbage mitts a) When you step in a deep puddle and water gets into your boots.
2) Hurry hard!
Said while playing the game called 'curling'. b) Sadness or depression caused by many months of cold weather.
3) A 'booter'
c) Home-made alcohol made using an alcohol barrel.
4) The winter 'blahs'
d) Tan coloured leather winter mittens.
5) A 'Jambuster'
e) A jelly filled donut with icing-sugar on the outside.
6) Swish
f) This is an instruction to sweep harder and more energetically.
How did you do? I hope it was fun. Remember to relax when doing this type of activity. Stress does not help and making mistakes is part of learning.
Well, it's a little cold today, so I'm going to put on my garbage mitts and winter boots and go for a walk to Tim Horton's to get a double-double and a Jambuster. This is a great way to avoid the winter blahs. I just hope I don't get a booter. I hate those.
If you can't seem to organize your learning, we can fix that!
