Hello language enthusiasts!
It is cold here in Ontario today. I really like the cold and especially the snow. It finally snowed here! Maybe you don't enjoy it, but I sure do!
Anyway, let us get to the topic.
When I was in Japan, I saw many examples of English that were funny. I only took at picture of two examples though. This is the second one. The first one can be viewed by clicking here.
I saw this sign:
What is wrong with this sign? Well, it reminded me of this sign:
Notice that the first sign is for a transportation system and the second is for a Subway restaurant.
No article (a, an, the) and no specific location makes the sign in Japan confusing.
In Toronto, we do this:
Notice that this sign says Subway Map.
To explain, if we just write Subway with a capital 'S', then it means the proper noun, with is the restaurant.
So, we need to use 'subway' as an adjective in order to avoid confusion. So, the sign in Japan should be written as The (city name) subway, as (city names's) subway map, or as The subway map.
Thank you for reading this post! I hope it helped.
