Maybe don't memorize...

Hello curious language learners!

Do you think that you have to memorize everything about English? The grammar, the irregular nouns and verb, the idioms, and more? If you think you do, that can be very frustrating and can even stop you from learning.

Study English and relax

My advice is that you only memorize what you need to. You must decide your own list, but here is a question you can ask yourself to help decide.

1) Why am I learning English? For communication? For a job? For a test? For school?

If you are learning for communication and travel, then maybe learning to recognize a mistake is enough sometimes. For example, if you see the sentence, "I have fishes at home," then you can recognize that "fishes" is wrong.

Maybe you don't know how to fix it yet, but that's okay. You have a smartphone. You can look up the proper form. You will find that "fish" is uncountable.

If you can't recognize the mistake, then you can't fix it. If you can recognize a mistake, then you can fix it. You don't have to memorize all the words. You have a phone!

If you are learning for a test or for school, then you may have to memorize more grammar, but not things like idioms. You can maybe just learn to identify idiom mistakes and do the same thing as the example above. By just looking over idioms (but not memorizing them) you will get a feeling if the idiom or phrase is wrong, and then you can look it up using your phone or computer.

By learning the skills that are less important for you last, you are doing what is called 'prioritizing'. Learn the important stuff first. Organize your learning!

Surprisingly, if you become able to identify mistakes, you will accidentally learn them in a pretty short time. You can trick your own brain into learning.

You are now an expert on learning! Now it's time to relax and learn.
