Discussion Article: Airbnb

Hello English learners!

I live in a big Canadian city and Airbnb is being discussed a lot. Here is the first of many discussion topics to help encourage you to practice English.

Here is a link to a new CBC article:

I am worried about how it is getting very hard to find a house, apartment, or condominium. The rental and purchase prices have been going up a lot. Some of the great parts of the city are almost impossible to rent an apartment in. Is this because of Airbnb? What do you think.

Here are some questions for you to help practice your discussion English:
  1. Who do you think is more important, people who rent properties to live in, or people who are travelling?
  2. Do you think Airbnb is fair to hotels and motels? Do you think they will disappear because of Airbnb?
  3. Is there Airbnb in your city or town? What do people think about it?
  4. Have you used Airbnb? What was your experience? Did you like it? If you have not used Airbnb, would you like to use it?
  5. Do you think the government should make rules about Airbnb? Do you agree that people should only be able to put their own homes for rent on Airbnb? Should people be allowed to buy an extra home just to rent on Airbnb?
  6. What do you think about car share programs? Are they unfair to car rental companies and car dealerships? Do you think car rental companies will disappear because of car share programs?
I hope you enjoy discussing this topic! Please leave any comments below. You can also email me your comments or requests for personalized English training.

We can fix that!

Matthew
